History
Reading Anthracite Company’s history dates back to the Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Company, founded in 1871. In 1961, the company was purchased by John B. Rich, the first generation of the Rich family, from Mickey Newman, with Warren Buffet serving as an analyst on the deal—a story highlighted in his book The Snowball. Since then, Reading Anthracite has remained family-owned and operated, transitioning to the leadership of Jack Rich in the second generation and now Brian R. Rich, the third generation. The company has evolved from fueling America’s industrial revolution to providing premium carbon solutions for modern industries, all while maintaining a commitment to growth and remaining the leader in the anthracite industry.
